The Fenghuang is a large bird that is well known for its beautiful plumage. It's feathers feature a rainbow of colors that shine and change based on the light. They are also far stronger and heavier than traditional feathers resulting in the bird only capable of short flights.Contrary to most bird gender distinctions, the female is the one well decorated and the males look more plain. As a result, the Fenghuang has often been used as a symbol of matriarchy and it's feathers used to decorate the clothing of high class women. The bird is native to all islands of Shinkami Dao and walks on long thin legs on the ground. It stands roughly 4 feet tall and it's tail feathers can grow up to a length of 6 feet. Due to it's symbol, the hunting of females is forbidden and heavily punished, although males are traditionally served at royal banquets. They are even kept as pets by many upper class households.
